Techno has always been more than just a soundtrack for the night; it is a form of protest through dance, a way to build a community inside the ruins of another. No one embodies this egalitarian, anti-establishment spirit quite like the matriarch of the Berlin scene, Ellen Allien.
Ahead of her highly anticipated full-length album New Life dropping this July, the BPitch label boss has dual-charged the anticipation by following up "Steh Auf" with a fierce second single: "Riot".
Together, these two tracks form the rousing, emotional center of the upcoming LP. Recorded over recent winters between Berlin, Miami, and Ibiza, New Life is an uncompromising sonic statement on personal autonomy and collective action. In an era where global club culture is increasingly swallowed by capitalist interests, Allien returns to the raw, anarchic roots of the underground to deliver a heavy dose of emotional rave music.
The first offering, "Steh Auf", serves as the rousing, emotional centerpiece of the upcoming record. It expertly weaves elements of minimal, darkwave, and hypnotic euphoria, all tied together by Allien’s signature spoken-word vocals that cut through the mix like signals from another planet. It is a dark, driving track that blends heavy club rhythms with rich, textured field recordings of crashing waves and birds singing under the Berlin night sky.
Following hot on its heels, the second single, "Riot", acts as another uncompromising sonic statement on personal autonomy and collective action. Channeling themes of empowerment and anarchy, the track returns to the raw, urgent roots of the underground, delivering a heavy dose of emotional rave music designed to unite the dancefloor and deliver light through the darkness.
More than just a collection of dancefloor weapons, this project tackles heavy themes, from humanity's destructive impact on our oceans to a celebration of chosen families, queerness, and womanhood beyond traditional scripts. With "Steh Auf" and "Riot", Ellen Allien doesn't just ask us to dance; she delivers a powerful wake-up call to dismantle failing systems and embrace new hope through self-determination.
