Review: Riordan & Locky — Friction

Riordan, fresh off a streak of chart-topping floor-fillers (including his Beatport #1 collaboration "Lifting" with Silva Bumpa) and major festival runs from Coachella’s Yuma Tent to Knockdown Center, meets Locky—the London producer whose studio handiwork helped propel "Can't Decide" to a DJ Mag Best of British Award. Released via Darkroom Records, "Friction" sees both artists pool their strengths into a track that bridges sleek modern tech house with the gritty, swing-heavy architecture of UK garage.

True to its title, the track operates on tension and kinetic momentum. Built around a muscular, low-slung bassline, "Friction" wastes little time with drawn-out pleasantries. Sharp, skittering percussion and micro-chopped vocal fragments drive the groove forward, echoing the sweat-slicked energy of a late-night basement or a sun-drenched European terrace. While much of contemporary tech house risks slipping into formulaic loopiness, Riordan and Locky keep the arrangements taut and responsive; subtle polyrhythmic shuffles and heavy bottom-end weight give the record a raw, bodily impact designed specifically for high-capacity sound systems.

Rather than over-producing, the pair lean into restraint—letting the rolling rhythm and snappy UKG-infused bounce do the heavy lifting.
